WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 El senador de Oreg\u00f3n, Jeff Merkley, miembro del Comit\u00e9 de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado, emiti\u00f3 la siguiente declaraci\u00f3n luego de que el secretario de Estado de EE. UU., Mike Pompeo, emitiera una nueva determinaci\u00f3n de que Hong Kong ya no es aut\u00f3nomo de China continental. La determinaci\u00f3n, que sigue una nueva ley antidemocr\u00e1tica que reprime Hong Kong<\/a>, se\u00f1ala el posible final del estatus comercial especial de Hong Kong con los Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n

\u201cEstados Unidos no tuvo m\u00e1s remedio que tomar esta determinaci\u00f3n despu\u00e9s del \u00faltimo ataque descarado del gobierno chino contra la autonom\u00eda pol\u00edtica de Hong Kong. Es un d\u00eda triste para la democracia y la libertad cuando debemos aceptar la verdad de que China ha violado los t\u00e9rminos del acuerdo chino-brit\u00e1nico y Hong Kong ya no tiene un estatus aut\u00f3nomo significativo separado de China continental.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa determinaci\u00f3n de hoy requerir\u00e1 cambios en la forma en que Estados Unidos trata econ\u00f3micamente a Hong Kong, lo que tendr\u00e1 repercusiones significativas para la econom\u00eda y la prosperidad de Hong Kong, en el contexto de la peor crisis econ\u00f3mica mundial desde la Gran Depresi\u00f3n.
