{"id":3907,"date":"2019-09-25T11:47:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T15:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/us-house-passes-marijuana-banking-bill\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:07:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T15:07:24","slug":"us-house-passes-marijuana-banking-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/us-house-passes-marijuana-banking-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. House passes marijuana banking bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dateline\">WASHINGTON D.C. &mdash;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. House of Representatives passed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/restructuring-medical-cannabis-in-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/restructuring-medical-cannabis-in-oregon\" rel=\"noopener\">factura&nbsp;<\/a>aiming to end the cash-based economy of legal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/cannabis-price-drop-hurts-dispensaries\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/cannabis-price-drop-hurts-dispensaries\" rel=\"noopener\">cannabis&nbsp;<\/a>businesses by making&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/features\/in-the-weeds\/senate-banking-committee-to-consider-banking-access-for-cannabis-businesses-07-25-2019\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/features\/in-the-weeds\/senate-banking-committee-to-consider-banking-access-for-cannabis-businesses-07-25-2019\" rel=\"noopener\">banking services<\/a>&nbsp;available.<\/p>\n<p>El&nbsp;<em>Ley de Banca Segura y Justa (SAFE)&nbsp;<\/em>passed in the House on Wednesday with a total of 321 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) said these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/flower-to-the-people-first-local-dispensary-owner-celebrates-five-years\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/flower-to-the-people-first-local-dispensary-owner-celebrates-five-years\" rel=\"noopener\">businesses&nbsp;<\/a>have been largely denied banking due to fear of prosecution. Merkley said it is creating a safety risk for businesses and surrounding communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It essentially addresses the challenge of billions of dollars of cash running around the country,&#8221; Merkley said. &#8220;The inability to use electronic banking results in cash transactions, susceptible to money laundering to theft to cheating on your taxes to cheating on your employees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The intention behind the law is to prevent banking regulators from prohibiting or discouraging banks from providing services to legitimate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/local-dispensary-\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/local-dispensary-\" rel=\"noopener\">cannabis business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation also creates a safe harbor from criminal prosecution and liability for banks and their officers.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON D.C. &mdash;&nbsp; The U.S. House of Representatives passed a&nbsp;bill&nbsp;aiming to end the cash-based economy of legal&nbsp;cannabis&nbsp;businesses by making&nbsp;banking services&nbsp;available.
