Washington DC<\/i><\/b> – U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are calling on the Department of Homeland Security to allow people whose DACA renewal applications were rejected because of U.S. Postal Service processing delays to resubmit their applications.<\/p>\n

The letter signed by the Oregon senators and 22 of their colleagues follows informes recientes<\/a> that DHS has rejected renewal requests for DACA received after the October 5, 2017 deadline application deadline due to Postal Service delays. They called on the department to take immediate action to reverse this decision and notify affected applicants. <\/p>\n

“We are deeply troubled that, despite the best efforts of many DACA recipients to submit their applications to DHS before October 5, the Department has rejected thousands of DACA renewal applications that arrived after the deadline,”<\/b> los senadores escribieron<\/strong>. “Although the Postal Service<\/a> has acknowledged that a mail processing delay affected some unknown number of DACA renewal applications, the Department still refuses to accept those applications. “We believe that this situation merits immediate action by the Department and urge you to reverse your decision to reject renewal requests for DACA that were received after the deadline due to mail delays. The Trump Administration announced in September that it was ending the DACA program that allows some immigrants known as Dreamers who came to the U.S. before the age of 16 to work and go to school without the fear of being deported. As a result of the Administration’s abrupt decision to terminate DACA, many young people were only given less than a month to file for renewal and many applicants are now left with deep uncertainty about whether they will be able to stay in school, keep working and contributing to our economy, or remain in their communities.<\/p>\n

The letter led by Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) was also signed by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Claire McCaskill (D-Miss.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Chris Coons (D-Del.),  Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.),  Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).<\/p>\n

A similar letter will be sent by U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke (D-TX). <\/p>\n

Escribimos para expresar nuestra preocupaci\u00f3n por los informes de que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) ha rechazado las solicitudes de renovaci\u00f3n de Acci\u00f3n Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) que se recibieron despu\u00e9s de la fecha l\u00edmite de solicitud debido a demoras en el procesamiento del Servicio Postal de EE. UU. Le instamos a que permita que las personas cuyas solicitudes de renovaci\u00f3n de DACA fueron rechazadas porque se recibieron despu\u00e9s de la fecha l\u00edmite del 5 de octubre de 2017 vuelvan a presentar sus solicitudes y notifiquen a dichos solicitantes sobre esta oportunidad. <\/em><\/p>\n

Como saben, el 5 de septiembre de 2017, la Administraci\u00f3n dio por terminado el programa DACA, dejando menos de un mes para que ciertos beneficiarios solicitaran la renovaci\u00f3n. Hemos escuchado de muchos j\u00f3venes en todo el pa\u00eds sobre la tremenda carga que este corto per\u00edodo de tiempo les impuso para cobrar la tarifa de solicitud y navegar el proceso de solicitud.<\/em><\/p>\n

En los cinco a\u00f1os desde la implementaci\u00f3n, DACA ha empoderado a aproximadamente 800,000 personas para salir de las sombras y buscar oportunidades como obtener acceso a la educaci\u00f3n superior y las habilidades necesarias, encontrar trabajo y servir en el ej\u00e9rcito. Como resultado de la abrupta decisi\u00f3n de la Administraci\u00f3n de cancelar DACA, muchos j\u00f3venes ahora tienen una profunda incertidumbre sobre si podr\u00e1n permanecer en la escuela, seguir trabajando y contribuyendo a nuestra econom\u00eda, o permanecer en sus comunidades.<\/em><\/p>\n
