"El cambio clim\u00e1tico es un problema global y Estados Unidos debe buscar soluciones globales", dijo Merkley. \u201cEl Fondo Verde para el Clima es exactamente el tipo de asociaci\u00f3n internacional que necesitamos para abordar este importante desaf\u00edo. Agradezco al Presidente Obama por establecer a Estados Unidos como un l\u00edder mundial en la primera l\u00ednea de la acci\u00f3n clim\u00e1tica y por dar otro paso importante hacia el cumplimiento del compromiso de $3 mil millones de Estados Unidos con el fondo.<\/span><\/p>\n

En 2014, el presidente Obama prometi\u00f3 a la comunidad internacional que Estados Unidos contribuir\u00eda con $3 mil millones al FVC durante 4 a\u00f1os. En 2015, Merkley y el senador Mark Kirk (R-IL) introdujeron una enmienda para eliminar la prohibici\u00f3n propuesta por el Congreso republicano de contribuir al Fondo Verde para el Clima. El Comit\u00e9 de Asignaciones del Senado aprob\u00f3 la enmienda con apoyo bipartidista. Luego, la enmienda se adopt\u00f3 en el proyecto de ley de asignaciones para operaciones estatales y extranjeras del Senado y finalmente permiti\u00f3 que el Departamento de Estado hiciera su primera contribuci\u00f3n de $500 millones al Fondo Verde para el Clima en marzo de 2016.
