{"id":5570,"date":"2016-04-11T07:16:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T11:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wyden-and-merkley-look-to-loosen-marijuana-research-restrictions\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:09:39","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T15:09:39","slug":"wyden-and-merkley-look-to-loosen-marijuana-research-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/wyden-and-merkley-look-to-loosen-marijuana-research-restrictions\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyden and Merkley look to loosen marijuana research restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">Oregon&#8217;s two U.S. senators have joined a drive to reschedule marijuana as cannabis becomes more widely accepted as a medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">Senators&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/search\/results?q=Ron%20Wyden\">Ron Wyden<\/a>&nbsp;y&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/search\/results?q=Jeff%20Merkley\">jeff merkley<\/a>&nbsp;announced last week three federal agencies will consider whether to move marijuana from &#8220;Schedule 1&#8221; of the federal government&#8217;s controlled substance list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">Schedule 1 is the most tightly restricted portion of the controlled substances list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">Three federal agencies told a group of senators&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/download\/?id=D7A77B8E-37E8-4401-842B-F8C67A9FFBC8&amp;download=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they want to &#8220;release a determination&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;in 2016 about whether to reschedule marijuana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">The agencies are the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The move could help enable more medical marijuana research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">The rescheduling could take place in the first half of 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">The agencies also, in the letter to senators, suggested ways more growers could be added to provide medical marijuana for research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment added-to-list1\">&#8220;The federal government should reduce barriers to researching the potential medical benefits of marijuana, and rescheduling it is the first essential step in that process,&#8221; Wyden said.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oregon&#8217;s two U.S. senators have joined a drive to reschedule marijuana as cannabis becomes more widely accepted as a medical treatment.
