Entre 2000 y 2012, la cantidad de estadounidenses de bajos ingresos que viv\u00edan en los suburbios super\u00f3 a los que viv\u00edan en las ciudades, con 6,5 millones de estadounidenses de bajos ingresos que se mudaron a los suburbios durante esos a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n
Sin sistemas de transporte que conecten a las personas de donde viven con buenos trabajos y otras oportunidades econ\u00f3micas, los estadounidenses de bajos ingresos se quedan cada vez m\u00e1s varados sin un camino hacia la clase media. Incluso en Portland, que constantemente se clasifica entre las 15 principales ciudades en cuanto a cobertura de transporte y acceso al trabajo, los estadounidenses de bajos ingresos todav\u00eda tienen dificultades para obtener el transporte que necesitan. La Ley de Transporte, Acceso y Oportunidades tiene como objetivo revertir esa tendencia al garantizar que los sistemas de transporte brinden a los estadounidenses las conexiones que necesitan para que su arduo trabajo rinda frutos.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1s temprano en la ma\u00f1ana, la Senadora Merkley se uni\u00f3 a Cazmine en su viaje matutino de dos horas y media desde su casa hasta su trabajo en el noreste de Portland. Durante el viaje, Cazmine y el Senador tuvieron que usar 3 autobuses y 1 tren Max para llegar a su trabajo. Esta fue una oportunidad para que el Senador viera de primera mano los desaf\u00edos que enfrentan los habitantes de Oreg\u00f3n para ir a trabajar y la necesidad de mejorar la interconexi\u00f3n de nuestro sistema de transporte.<\/p>\n
El proyecto de ley establecer\u00eda una meta nacional de lograr un sistema de transporte interconectado que conecte a las personas con oportunidades econ\u00f3micas como trabajos, capacitaci\u00f3n laboral, educaci\u00f3n y otros servicios cr\u00edticos como atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica y cuidado infantil. Para lograr este objetivo, establecer\u00eda un proyecto piloto para permitir que diez Organizaciones de Planificaci\u00f3n Metropolitana con poblaciones de m\u00e1s de 200,000 personas identifiquen e implementen enfoques para mejorar la capacidad de sus residentes para conectarse a oportunidades a trav\u00e9s de la red de transporte.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cA medida que la regi\u00f3n metropolitana de Portland se recupera de los efectos devastadores de la Gran Recesi\u00f3n, se crean m\u00e1s puestos de trabajo.
