Washington, DC- Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement after Royal Dutch Shell announced they will not drill in the Arctic Ocean in 2013. <\/p>\n

“Shell has made the right decision in canceling its plans to drill offshore in the Arctic this coming summer. Their experience in 2012 demonstrated the tremendous difficulties of Arctic drilling and the huge risk of an environmental disaster. The potential for catastrophic consequences is enormous and such drilling should not be permitted.” <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On September 21, 2012, Senator Merkley wrote a letter to Secretary Salazar to express his concerns about offshore drilling in the Arctic. The letter is aqu\u00ed.<\/a><\/p>\n
