WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 El senador de Oreg\u00f3n, Jeff Merkley, reiter\u00f3 hoy su llamado a que el Presidente se comprometa con una reducci\u00f3n considerable y sostenida de las tropas de Afganist\u00e1n. Est\u00e1 previsto que el Presidente Obama hable sobre el futuro de ese pa\u00eds esta noche. Los primeros informes noticiosos indican que Obama pedir\u00e1 ahora peque\u00f1as reducciones en las tropas de combate, dejando la mayor parte de las tropas de \u201cincremento\u201d en el lugar hasta 2012 y aproximadamente 70.000 miembros del servicio en Afganist\u00e1n m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de ese per\u00edodo. <\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSi los informes sobre el discurso del presidente son correctos, al final de su mandato tendremos el doble de tropas de combate en Afganist\u00e1n que al principio. En lugar de eso, deber\u00edamos tener un camino para traer esas tropas a casa.<\/p>\n

\u201cLo que necesitamos escuchar esta noche es un compromiso para cambiar la estrategia de construcci\u00f3n nacional actualmente vigente. Fuimos a Afganist\u00e1n para lograr tres objetivos: acabar con los campos de entrenamiento de terroristas de Al Qaeda, derrocar al gobierno talib\u00e1n que da refugio a los terroristas y llevar ante la justicia a quienes nos atacaron el 11 de septiembre.el<\/sup>. Hemos logrado en gran medida esos objetivos. <\/p>\n

\u201cPero en el camino se a\u00f1adi\u00f3 un cuarto objetivo: un esfuerzo indefinido de construcci\u00f3n de una naci\u00f3n, a un costo de miles de millones de d\u00f3lares. Este no deber\u00eda seguir siendo el foco principal de nuestros esfuerzos de seguridad nacional.<\/p>\n

\u201cEn cambio, tengo la esperanza de que el Presidente esboce un plan que nos proporcione un camino para poner fin a nuestra participaci\u00f3n en Afganist\u00e1n y un enfoque renovado en perseguir a los terroristas en todo el mundo. <\/p>\n

\u201cAdem\u00e1s, deber\u00edamos invertir en la construcci\u00f3n de una naci\u00f3n aqu\u00ed en casa y hacer que la econom\u00eda estadounidense vuelva a moverse. Despu\u00e9s de diez a\u00f1os, hemos logrado lo que originalmente nos propusimos lograr en Afganist\u00e1n. Es hora de poner fin a esta guerra\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
