The Recovery Act funding will go toward improving the health, sanitation and infrastructure of the water system, and help protect the local environment from contamination.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&ldquo;The public health and well-being of Oregon&rsquo;s communities is extremely important,&rdquo; said Merkley.&nbsp; &ldquo;These funds will enable the City of Sutherlin to make essential improvements to their water system, and ensure that Oregon families have access to clean, safe drinking water.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><p>&ldquo;This funding is an investment in rural America that will improve water system infrastructure and give folks in Sutherlin the peace of mind that comes with clean, safe drinking water,&rdquo; said Wyden. &rdquo;In the process, it will also create much-needed jobs in rural Oregon.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The City of Sutherlin is grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden for their help in securing these funds,&rdquo; said Sutherlin Mayor Stan McKnight.&nbsp; &ldquo;This project is very difficult for any community to afford.&nbsp; The grant and low interest loan provided by the Recovery Act will help Sutherlin restore our water system and comply with clean water regulations.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The City of Sutherlin will receive a Recovery Act loan and grant totaling $7,340,450 to make necessary improvements to the water system and ensure the delivery of safe drinking water to their community.&nbsp; This project is part of the Obama Administration&rsquo;s plan to provide reliable services in rural America and further economic recovery by supporting job creation through economic development initiatives.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. &ndash; Oregon&rsquo;s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $7 million to improve the water system in Sutherlin, Oregon.
