Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $2 million to the Umatilla Reservation Housing Authority for the operation and development of affordable housing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&ldquo;A safe, affordable home is crucial to the success of families,&rdquo; Merkley said.&nbsp; &ldquo;It is excellent news that the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation are receiving this funding and I know they&rsquo;ll be able to put it to good use providing quality housing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This money from HUD will be a big help for families on the Umatilla reservation, making it easier for them to have an affordable place to live in a safe community,&rdquo; said Wyden. &ldquo;The awarding of these funds also means there is new potential for job creation in the community, which is more important than ever.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the funds can be used for a variety of eligible affordable housing activities, including operating assistance;
