said Merkley<span>&nbsp; <\/span>&quot;Este<br \/>\nfunding is an important step forward in helping veterans get off the streets<br \/>\nand back on their feet.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The legislation will provide $50 million in additional funding to the<br \/>\nDepartment of Veterans Affairs to renovate unused and under-utilized VA<br \/>\nbuildings and pursue public\/private partnerships to help provide homeless veterans<br \/>\nwith housing, health and supportive services.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p> The amendment, introduced by Senator Tim Johnson (D-ND), was adopted as part of<br \/>\nthe Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The bill must now go to conference committee<br \/>\nand be adopted by the full Senate and House before being sent to the President.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Last week, Senator Merkley co-sponsored two bills to help<br \/>\nprovide housing assistance for veterans.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The Homes for Heroes Act and the Zero Tolerance for Veterans<br \/>\nHomelessness Act would provide additional assistance to reduce homelessness<br \/>\namong veterans and make it easier for community and nonprofit organizations to<br \/>\nbetter assist homeless veterans currently out of work.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In addition, Senator Merkley sponsored S.1366<br \/>\na <span>allow <\/span>taxpayers to designate<br \/>\na portion of their income tax payment for the Homeless Veterans Assistance<br \/>\nFund.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC &ndash;
