Washington, D.C.<\/strong> – U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D- Ore.)
\nand Jeff Merkley (D- Ore.) announced today that an agriculture appropriations
\nbill headed to the Senate floor includes more than $7 million in projects for
\nOregon. Included in the bill is funding for research into improving Oregon’s
\ncrops and controlling invasive species.<\/p>\n

“Agriculture producers have always played a major role in
\nthe success of this state and it is important that wise investments are made to
\nensure that continues to be the case,” Wyden said.  “These funds
\nwill support investment into research and infrastructure projects that will
\nkeep Oregon’s agriculture industry thriving for years to come.”<\/p>\n

\n

“It’s critical that our farmers are given all the
\nnecessary resources to improve the quality and sustainability of their crops
\nand protect their farms from disease and pests,” said Merkley. “These
\nfunds will invest in research to help boost the economic livelihood of Oregon
\nfarmers, advance our blossoming organic agriculture industry, and increase
\nefforts to support our timber industry.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Projects included in the agriculture appropriations bill
\ninclude:<\/p>\n

Organic Cropping Research for the Northwest – $149,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

Funds will be used for research into the improvement and support of Oregon’s
\nburgeoning organic agriculture industry.  A panel representing scientists,
\nindustry representatives and farmers will evaluate proposals and distribute
\navailable funds.<\/p>\n

Northwest Center for Small Fruits Research, Small Fruits
\nInitiative Plant Improvement – $275,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

Funds will be used for a Small Fruit Pathology Program, Site
\nFeasibility Study and Phase-one Design for Additional or New Research
\nFacilities, and Competitive Research Grants which involves cooperation between
\nindustry, State and Federal research.<\/p>\n

Small Fruit Research – $300,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

These funds would provide for competitive grants to enhance
\nprofitability and sustainability for a number of crops including blueberries,
\nstrawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, table grapes, wine
\ngrapes, huckleberries, gooseberries, and black currants.<\/p>\n

Invasive Weed Management – $500,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medusahead, and other annual grasses, are destroying the
\nagricultural sustainablility, ecology, and fire regimes of the Great Basin and
\nsurrounding ecosystems. These funds will be used for testing large-scale
\nmanagement strategies for medusahead and annual grass infested rangeland and
\ndeveloping new, sustainable methods for managing medusahead and other annual
\ngrass weeds in the Great Basin.<\/p>\n

Potato Research (several states) – $1,037,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

The funds are used to develop and identify varieties with
\nhigh yield, improved processing quality, genetic resistance to major pests and
\ndiseases, higher levels of resistance to stresses, increased nutrient use
\nefficiency, improved human nutritional value, and high tuber quality. <\/p>\n


Wood Utilization Research (WUR) Center at OSU –
\n$4,841,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

The WUR Program provides innovative science, technology and advanced
\nbusiness practices research and graduate education.  Funds will support
\nnew initiatives in the development of bioproducts, composite materials,
\nbio-based energy and nanotechnology that can help position Oregon to be a
\nleader in these fields in the Western US and enhance competitiveness of
\ndomestic industry.<\/p>\n

Grass Seed Cropping Systems for Sustainable Agriculture –
\n$150,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

For research into sustainable production of grass seed, a
\nmajor Oregon export, aimed at addressing critical environmental and economic
\nchallenges including the phase-out of open-field burning.  The project
\ncovers Oregon, Idaho and Washington, with Oregon-based scientists typically
\nreceiving more than half of available funds.<\/p>\n

In addition to the funding listed above, the committee
\nincluded language in its report supporting the following projects:<\/p>\n

Benton County Fairgrounds Waste Water Collection and
\nDrainage Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project will use green technology solutions to treat
\nsurface animal waste through a manmade wetland.<\/p>\n

Relocating Seaside School District out of tsunami zone<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project will move Seaside School District facilities
\nout of the tsunami zone, as recommended by the Oregon Department of Geology and
\nMineral Industries.<\/p>\n

Spalding Sewer Lift Station<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project will install a sewer system to service a
\n65-acre piece of land currently zoned for industrial use in the City of Grants
\nPass. This parcel is among the few suitable industrial areas in the city and
\nlacks only an adequate sewage system in order to be a viable location for
\nbusinesses.<\/p>\n

Old Highway 62\/Royal
\nAvenue Water Main Replacement<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a
\nshovel-ready project to replace an old and aging 6-inch asbestos cement
\nwaterline with a 12-inch waterline to provide additional capacity to the City’s
\nwater system. All funds will be used for construction and construction
\nengineering of the project.<\/p>\n

Hubbard Creek Impoundment Improvement Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project will enlarge the Hubbard Creek Impoundment, to
\nensure that the City of Port Orford has sufficient water for the community’s
\nneeds.<\/p>\n

City of Eagle Point Reservoir Retrofit<\/strong><\/p>\n

This shovel ready project will retrofit an existing 4 million
\ngallon reservoir to expand the water system.  All funds will be used
\ndirectly for construction and construction engineering of the project. 
\nDesign is 100% complete.<\/p>\n

The bill will be considered by the full Senate and upon
\npassage will be reconciled with the version passed by the House of
