Washington, DC<\/strong> –
\nOregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley joined his colleagues on the Senate Environment
\nand Public Works Committee in approving legislation to re-authorize funding for
\nclean drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure in Oregon. 
\nBy authorizing up to $34.7 billion over five years, the Water Infrastructure
\nFinancing Act supports public health, job creation, and economic growth in
\ncommunities around the state and around the country.<\/p>\n

\n

 “Clean drinking water and
\neffective wastewater removal are critical for Oregon’s communities to thrive,”
\nsaid Merkley.  “This legislation expands federal financing for water infrastructure
\nthat cities and small towns, especially those in our Western states, depend
\non.  I’m happy to support a policy that will create jobs and provide clean
\nwater to more Americans.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The bill will increase Oregon’s
\nshare of the federal water money and will, in combination with President
\nObama’s budget, triple the federal dollars coming to Oregon’s Clean Water State
\nRevolving Fund.  The legislation will also improve water infrastructure
\naround the country by:<\/p>\n

·     •   
\nReserving 1.5 percent of the funding from the
\nbill to be distributed to Indian tribes for water infrastructure;<\/p>\n

·     •   
\nMaking it easier for communities to pay for
\nprojects by lengthening the contract term for loans;<\/p>\n

·     •   
\nIncluding incentives to encourage the
\nconstruction of low-impact, environmentally-friendly infrastructure; and<\/p>\n

·     •   
\nCreating a new fund for agriculture projects
\nthat improve water quality or water efficiency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
