{"id":7146,"date":"2009-05-06T12:12:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-06T16:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/merkley-senate-bill-will-help-families-stay-in-their-homes\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T15:11:49","slug":"merkley-senate-bill-will-help-families-stay-in-their-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-senate-bill-will-help-families-stay-in-their-homes\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley: Proyecto de ley del Senado ayudar\u00e1 a las familias a permanecer en sus hogares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC &ndash; Today the U.S. Senate passed crucial<br \/>\nhousing legislation to address the mortgage crisis and assist families facing<br \/>\nforeclosure.&nbsp;&nbsp; The bill provides additional resources to prevent<br \/>\nfuture foreclosures and expands access to the HOPE for Homeowners<br \/>\nProgram.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&ldquo;The loss of a home is a devastating blow for any family and<br \/>\nthe legislation passed today will help those across America who urgently need<br \/>\nit,&rdquo; said Merkley.&nbsp; &ldquo;Included in this legislation are tools for the<br \/>\nFederal Housing Administration to eliminate bad lenders and help prevent people<br \/>\nfrom falling victim to foreclosure scams. While I am disappointed that the<br \/>\nSenate did not approve the lifeline option to give bankruptcy judges the<br \/>\nability to modify the terms of a loan, this bill still provides significant<br \/>\nresources to help families remain in their homes.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Helping Families Save Their Homes Act will help prevent<br \/>\nforeclosures, increase the availability of credit, and make the banking system<br \/>\nmore stable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill helps homeowners by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Expanding the ability of the Federal Housing<br \/>\n     Administration and Rural Housing to modify loans<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Expanding access to the HOPE for Homeowner Program,<br \/>\n     which helps homeowners avoid foreclosure<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Creating more enforcement tools for FHA to eliminate<br \/>\n     bad lenders <\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Authorizing an additional $127.5 million for<br \/>\n     foreclosure prevention, including funding for foreclosure counseling<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Increasing borrowing authority for the Federal Deposit<br \/>\n     Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the National Credit Union Association<br \/>\n     (NCUA)<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Authorizing $2.2 billion in additional funds to<br \/>\nprevent homelessness<!--[endif]--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The legislation includes an important amendment authored by Senator John Kerry<br \/>\n(D-Mass.) and cosponsored by Senator Merkley that ensures that tenants and<br \/>\nfamilies who might otherwise have to vacate their homes &nbsp;may remain in<br \/>\ntheir homes for the balance of their lease or, if there is no lease, have 90<br \/>\ndays to find their next home.&nbsp;&nbsp; Also included is an amendment from<br \/>\nSenator Barbara Boxer (D-Cal.), co-sponsored by Merkley, to crack down on fraud<br \/>\nand corruption between sellers and buyers of toxic assets.&nbsp; The amendment<br \/>\nauthorizes $15 million for the Special Inspector General for the Term Asset<br \/>\nRelief Program (TARP) to audit recipients of non-recourse Federal loans through<br \/>\nthe Public Private Investment Program and the Term Asset Loan Facility to<br \/>\nensure they do not attempt to manipulate those programs to defraud the federal<br \/>\ngovernment.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&ldquo;Renters have been treated extremely unfairly in the past,<br \/>\noften tossed out of their homes on short notice despite having a lease,&rdquo; said<br \/>\nSenator Merkley.&nbsp; &ldquo;It is simply unfair that these families, who followed<br \/>\nthe rules and who may have lived in their houses and apartments for years,<br \/>\nshould be forced to leave their homes by circumstances beyond their control.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12pt;\">In the coming weeks, Merkley will continue<br \/>\nhis push to restore fairness for American homeowners by chairing an upcoming<br \/>\nhearing on predatory lending practices in the Banking, Housing and Urban<br \/>\nDevelopment Committee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC &ndash;
