Washington, DC \u2013 Hoy, el Departamento de Trabajo de EE. UU. public\u00f3 nuevas cifras de empleo que muestran la p\u00e9rdida de otro medio mill\u00f3n de empleos y la tasa de desempleo que se dispar\u00f3 a 7,2% en diciembre.  <\/span>En Oreg\u00f3n, la tasa ya supera los 8%.  <\/span>El senador de Oreg\u00f3n, Jeff Merkley, emiti\u00f3 la siguiente declaraci\u00f3n:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEl oto\u00f1o pasado, el Congreso aprob\u00f3 un rescate de $700 mil millones de la industria de servicios financieros que se supon\u00eda desbloquear\u00eda los pr\u00e9stamos y detendr\u00eda la ca\u00edda de nuestra econom\u00eda.  <\/span>Ahora est\u00e1 m\u00e1s claro que nunca que no funcion\u00f3: no abord\u00f3 los problemas subyacentes en el mercado hipotecario y no hizo casi nada para ayudar a los trabajadores estadounidenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDebemos aprender de ese error y elaborar un nuevo paquete de recuperaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica que se centre directamente en los trabajadores estadounidenses.  <\/span>Con el desempleo en su nivel m\u00e1s alto en 16 a\u00f1os, no tenemos tiempo que perder: necesitamos una acci\u00f3n inmediata para que nuestra naci\u00f3n vuelva a trabajar.  <\/span>Trabajar\u00e9 con mis nuevos colegas para asegurarme de que estamos invirtiendo en la creaci\u00f3n de empleo, tecnolog\u00eda verde y la infraestructura que es la columna vertebral de nuestra econom\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHubo algunas buenas noticias el \u00faltimo d\u00eda: Citibank ha expresado su apoyo a la legislaci\u00f3n que permitir\u00eda a los jueces de bancarrotas modificar los t\u00e9rminos de las hipotecas de viviendas, al igual que pueden hacerlo con otros pr\u00e9stamos.  <\/span>Se trata de una disposici\u00f3n extremadamente importante que apoyo firmemente.  <\/span>Esta disposici\u00f3n reconoce que, para volver a encarrilar nuestra econom\u00eda, necesitamos ayudar directamente a las familias en apuros.  <\/span>Espero que esto ayude a despejar el camino para incluir esta disposici\u00f3n en el paquete de recuperaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica, manteniendo a cientos de miles de estadounidenses en sus hogares.<\/span><\/p>\n
