WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 El senador estadounidense de Oreg\u00f3n, Jeff Merkley, emiti\u00f3 la siguiente declaraci\u00f3n con respecto a la legislaci\u00f3n que el Congreso est\u00e1 considerando esta semana que aumentar\u00eda el l\u00edmite de deuda hasta 2025 mientras recorta los programas de los que dependen los trabajadores estadounidenses y destruye las revisiones ambientales para proyectos de combustibles f\u00f3siles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cDesde que se public\u00f3 el texto de esta legislaci\u00f3n, me he sumergido en los detalles y he escuchado atentamente los puntos de vista de todos. Aprecio la diversidad de opiniones dentro del Congreso y dentro de mi propio caucus. A\u00fan as\u00ed, no puedo en buena conciencia votar por este proyecto de ley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEste proyecto de ley rompe con la pr\u00e1ctica reciente, establecida y bipartidista, recortando programas que son la base para familias pr\u00f3speras, incluida la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, la vivienda y la educaci\u00f3n, para aumentar el gasto militar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAdem\u00e1s, este proyecto de ley sienta dos precedentes verdaderamente horribles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cExime por completo al oleoducto Mountain Valley (MVP) de cumplir con la ley ambiental, a pesar de que la empresa que construye el oleoducto es un infractor atroz que ha acumulado m\u00e1s de 500 infracciones en dos estados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAdem\u00e1s, el proyecto de ley dicta la jurisdicci\u00f3n de la corte para el MVP en caso de que haya desaf\u00edos legales adicionales. Esto socava profundamente la integridad de nuestro poder judicial. Que el Congreso, por ley, traslade un caso judicial de una jurisdicci\u00f3n a otra, para otorgar un favor especial a una corporaci\u00f3n poderosa, es fundamentalmente corrupto. Esta es una l\u00ednea que nunca debemos cruzar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEl oleoducto en s\u00ed mismo es un asalto contra un planeta sostenible. Debemos reconocer que el gas f\u00f3sil es tan da\u00f1ino como el carb\u00f3n. Pretender lo contrario nos est\u00e1 llevando a la cat\u00e1strofe clim\u00e1tica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFinalmente, este proyecto de ley contiene cambios en la ley ambiental b\u00e1sica que permitir\u00e1n a las empresas de combustibles f\u00f3siles evadir la responsabilidad y la rendici\u00f3n de cuentas. Permite a las empresas escribir sus propias evaluaciones de impacto ambiental. Cambia los est\u00e1ndares para la ciencia y los datos aceptables. Exime a proyectos completos de oleoductos de las protecciones ambientales federales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReconozco plenamente que el incumplimiento de la deuda ser\u00eda un desastre para las familias trabajadoras y nunca se debe permitir que suceda. Es inconcebible que los republicanos de MAGA y el presidente McCarthy estuvieran dispuestos a entretenerse en llevar la econom\u00eda al precipicio de la morosidad. Sin embargo, ceder a este chantaje solo garantiza que los republicanos utilizar\u00e1n el l\u00edmite de la deuda para mantener a Estados Unidos como reh\u00e9n una y otra vez.
