Planned closure of Coast Guard air facility rankles federal lawmakers

NEWPORT — Members of Oregon’s congressional delegation, including Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, have written a letter to the U.S. Coast Guard voicing their concerns and opposition over the planned closure of the Newport Air Facility.

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners also officially jumped on board to oppose the impending closure, approving a resolution Wednesday morning.

Newport is home to the state’s largest commercial fleet and a growing recreational industry, and “has great potential for growth” said Commissioner Doug Hunt, which makes the decision even more disconcerting.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a petition opposing the closure, started by a concerned resident, had more than 7,150 signatures.
