PDX lands $72.3 million in coronavirus relief

The federal CARES Act included $10 billion in coronavirus relief funds for U.S. airports, and $140.1 million is on its way to Oregon.

The money is in the form of 55 separate grants, but just over half, $72.3 million, is for Portland International.

Other big grants are going to Mahlon Sweet Field in Eugene ($22.7 million), Eastern Oregon Regional in Pendleton ($16.9 million) and Rogue Valley International in Medford ($15.1 million).

In a news release, U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley cited a report that air travel was down 96 percent due to the coronavirus crisis. That’s hammered revenue, and the Port of Portland, which runs Portland International, recently said it would try to cut costs $20 million, the Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

The full list of Oregon grants can be found at the end of the Wyden-Merkley news release.
