Merkley Applauds Senate Confirmation of Linda Thomas-Greenfield as Ambassador to the United Nations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley—who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and will serve as the Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China for the 117th Congress—released the following statement after Linda Thomas-Greenfield was confirmed to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations:

“After four years of the United States abandoning nearly every form of leadership on the international stage, it’s more important than ever that we once again take a seat at the table to build the strong partnerships needed to tackle this pandemic, the climate crisis, and escalating attacks on human rights around the world.

“The confirmation of Linda Thomas-Greenfield as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations is a big step in the right direction. Her lifetime of experience, commitment to the values we cherish as Americans—including freedom, equality, diversity, equity, and inclusion—and demonstrated ability to strengthen our alliances around the world speak for themselves, and have prepared her to excel in this ambassadorship. I look forward to working with her throughout her tenure to advance comprehensive, collaborative approaches to our shared global challenges, and to ensure that perpetrators of human rights abuses are held accountable for their actions.”
