Merkley, Wyden Announce Critical Investments in Oregon’s Public Transit

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden today announced over $2.6 million in grant funding for bus and bus facilities upgrades for communities across Oregon. Wasco and Yamhill Counties, as well as the cities of Woodburn, Salem, Eugene, and Florence are recipients of the awards.

"Public transportation upgrades are great for the health, inclusiveness, and economy of our communities," said Merkley. "These grants will help six cities and counties reduce congestion and emissions from single-occupancy vehicles, while helping to make these communities more accessible for all. I'm looking forward to watching that progress unfold, and will continue to look for ways to support transit districts across our state."

“Mass transit plays a huge role in helping Oregonians get around our communities for jobs, school and more,” Wyden said. “I am gratified that these cities and counties have earned these grants that allow them to continue significant investments in bus options that benefit quality of life throughout our state.”

The grants will help communities finance a range of bus and bus facility capital projects, including the replacement, rehabilitation, purchasing, or leasing of buses, bus facilities, or related equipment.

The specific award amounts are as follows:

  • Oregon Department of Transportation (Mid-Columbia Economic Development District), Wasco County: $150,126.
  • Oregon Department of Transportation (City of Woodburn), Woodburn: $300,000.
  • Oregon Department of Transportation (Yamhill County Transit), Yamhill County: $999,968.00.
  • Salem Area Mass Transit District, Salem: $1,054,240.00.
  • Oregon Department of Transportation, Eugene and Florence: $110,500.
