WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that the Lane Transit District will receive over $25 million in funding to support its public transportation operations and projects, including coronavirus response efforts.
The funding was authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and is being distributed by the Federal Transit Administration.
“I’m grateful for the dedicated transit workers throughout Lane County who are on the frontlines of this crisis,” said Merkley. “Not only will this support for the Lane Transit District help keep them safe, it will help ensure that other essential workers can do their jobs, and keep grocery stores and pharmacies within reach for more Oregonians. I’m going to continue working to make sure our frontline workers are safe and supported as they help us weather this storm.”
“The solid commitment to service by the essential workers at Lane Transit District deserves the fullest possible support during this public health crisis,” Wyden said. “I am gratified these resources are now available for them and the residents of Lane County counting on them for reliable transit to work, shop and conduct business. And I will keep fighting for the funds that mass transit needs to remain robust in Lane County and statewide through this pandemic and beyond.”
“This funding is a lifeline for LTD,” said Aurora Jackson, general manager of Lane Transit District. “While we are still forced to make some difficult decisions in this unprecedented time, this grant is critical to keeping public transit accessible to our ridership, giving people across Lane County access to essential services. I thank Senator Merkley and Senator Wyden for all they’ve done to advocate for this support.”
The grants will be used to prepare for and respond to the pandemic by paying for operating, administrating, and preventive maintenance costs, such as parts, sanitizing, and personal protective equipment.
