During a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on the environmental impact of 6PPD, a chemical used in tires, Senator Merkley pushed for a replacement that will protect critical fish species and ecosystems. Salmon, trout, and other fish species are unlikely to recover unless we find an alternative, and as chair of the Senate subcommittee that oversees chemical safety, Senator Merkley is calling for solutions.

Senator Merkley spoke out against Wall Street billionaires opening election casinos and creating massive political betting markets on the floor of the U.S. Senate on September 16, 2024. Senator Merkley has been an outspoken proponent of banning election gambling.

Last week, a district court judge opened the doors to multimillion dollar bets on elections, inviting election interference and undermining our democracy. This would allow billionaires to bet millions on the outcomes of our elections and spend dark money to smear candidates and protect their bets.

On Friday, an appeals court temporarily paused the decision. This is an ongoing case, and Senator Merkley will continue to speak out against the danger of gambling on elections.
