Senator Merkley had a conversation with Melissa Adamson of the National Center for Youth Law (NYCL) about serious flaws in the Laken Riley Act as written that will cause major harm to children.

Senator Merkley spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate on January 16, 2025 to point out flaws in the Laken Riley Act that puts particularly vulnerable children in particularly dangerous situations. Merkley offered three amendments to the Laken Riley Act to protect children, which Republicans objected to.

Senator Merkley was on the Senate floor on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, to talk about how the Trump Tax Plan betrays working families and will blow a $4.6 TRILLION hole in our budget over the next 10 years.

In the face of the damage that wildfires, hurricanes, landslides, tornados, and flooding have wrought on national parks, wildlife refuges, and national forests across the country during the past two years, Senator Merkley made the case for restoration and repair of public lands and infrastructure during a Senate Appropriations Committee Hearing titled, “A Review of Disaster Funding Needs.” Buildings, roads, bridges, communications systems, and other public infrastructure that local communities rely on have been damaged or destroyed during extreme weather events, hurting local economies and harming treasured parks and forests that have millions of visitors each year.
