PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon leaders sent a letter to the Department of Justice and Homeland Security on Tuesday, expressing concern about how federal law enforcement have responded to protests in Portland.
The letter, signed by Senator Ron Wyden, Senator Jeff Merkley, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, and Congressman Earl Blumenauer, references protester Donovan LaBella, who was shot in the head with crowd control munition.
LaBella is still recovering at the hospital.
“We’re deeply concerned by these officers’ presence and actions and the seeming lack of on-the-ground coordination between agencies and departments,” the letter read.
Lastly, they wrote a list of questions they would like answered by July 21. That includes:
- Are officers identifiable by badges with their names and personnel numbers?
- Who is in charge of the DOJ and DHS federal response in Portland?
- Which Oregon cities are the DOJ and DHS conducting protest operations?
- Please confirm if the officer who fired the munition that hit a protester has been identified, and whether the officer will face investigation, sanction or other action.
