Merkley Praises Confirmation of OSU's Lubchenco to Lead Oceans and Environment Agency
Washington, DC – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement on the confirmation of Oregon State University professor Dr. Jane Lubchenco as Commerce Undersecretary for Oceans and Atmosphere. Dr. Lubchenco will lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“I’m proud that we now have a strong scientific voice for curbing global warming serving in this critical post. I’ve had the pleasure of discussing some of the environmental challenges we face with Dr. Jane Lubchenco and I’m confident she will make a valuable addition to President Obama’s team, working on global warming as well as the conservation of our ocean resources. Coming from Oregon, Dr. Lubchenco also brings valuable familiarity with the serious economic challenges facing Oregon’s fishing communities. It’s unfortunate that her nomination was delayed, but now that she’s been confirmed, Dr. Lubchenco can start putting her scientific experience to work at NOAA.”
