Merkley Statement on Ross Nomination
Merkley Statement on Ross Nomination
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement regarding the nomination of Wilbur Ross to serve as Commerce Secretary. Ross’s nomination is being voted on by the Senate on Monday night.
“Wilbur Ross has refused to answer important questions about his financial empire’s ties to Russia and the Bank of Cyprus. That alone should prohibit him from being in charge of the Department of Commerce. Americans have the right to know about all the conflicts of interest that could affect the judgement of a Cabinet official, and his failure to be forthcoming should disqualify him.”
Ross has been the top investor in the Bank of Cyprus at the same time that close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin have also been major shareholders in the Bank. Ross has refused to answer questions from Senators about his ties to the Bank and to Russia.
