Merkley Statement on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

WASHINGTON – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001:

“Ten years ago, our nation watched in shock and horror as an unprecedented attack on American innocents was carried out in cold blood. We knew that day the world would never be the same.

“A decade later, we have come a long way in healing. Our enemies and the world know now that America comes back with resilience and courage in the face of even the most horrific acts of terrorism.  But we will also never forget what we lost forever: the irreplaceable lives of nearly 3,000 civilians and courageous first responders. We solemnly commemorate and honor the legacy they left. The families and loved ones of those lost will weigh heavily in my thoughts and prayers this weekend, as I know they will in the hearts of Americans everywhere.

“I hope we can mark this sad anniversary by re-dedicating ourselves to the spirit of service exemplified by so many who lost their lives that day and to the sense of common purpose that brought us together in our grief.”
