Merkley Statement on Withdrawal of American Troops from Iraqi Cities
Washington D.C. – Today marks the official withdrawal of American soldiers from Iraqi cities and the transition of military operations to Iraqi authorities. Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement:
“Today is an important milestone in a war that has lasted six long years. American forces are withdrawing from Iraqi towns and cities and handing over authority to the Iraqi people to provide their own security to their citizens. I have long advocated for this war to come to an end and to bring our troops home safely and swiftly. We should never have begun this war, but today is an important step to restoring our reputation abroad and seeing our sons and daughters return home to their families.”
