Merkley to Serve on New Appropriations Subcommittees Key to Oregon Priorities

WASHINGTON – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley announced today that he has been appointed to serve on two new subcommittees of the Senate Appropriations Committee: the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and the Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.

The Energy and Water Subcommittee controls funding for the U.S. Department of Energy, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Army Corps of Engineers. These agencies are responsible for funding important infrastructure projects across Oregon, including badly-needed small port funding and water infrastructure projects, as well as grants that help Oregon be a leader in deploying clean energy.

The State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee jurisdiction includes the Export-Import Bank, foreign aid and America’s diplomatic efforts abroad.

Merkley will also continue his service on three Appropriations Subcommittees:

  • Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies
  • Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies
  • Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies

Merkley will serve as the Ranking Member of the Agriculture Subcommittee.

“Serving Oregon on the Appropriations Committee has been an honor, and these subcommittees provide a terrific opportunity to fight for Oregon values and Oregon jobs in the new Congress,” said Merkley. “From wildfire prevention, to early childhood education, to small port funding and so much more, these subcommittees are at the center of the conversation on a host of critical issues. I look forward to bringing Oregonians’ voices to the table and making sure that they are heard in Washington, D.C.”

More information on the subcommittees, including the full jurisdiction of each subcommittee, can be found on the Appropriations Committee website.
