Merkley, Wyden Announce Nearly $2 Million for Affordable Housing on Umatilla Reservation
Portland, OR – Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $2 million to the Umatilla Reservation Housing Authority for the operation and development of affordable housing.
“A safe, affordable home is crucial to the success of families,” Merkley said. “It is excellent news that the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation are receiving this funding and I know they’ll be able to put it to good use providing quality housing.”“This money from HUD will be a big help for families on the Umatilla reservation, making it easier for them to have an affordable place to live in a safe community,” said Wyden. “The awarding of these funds also means there is new potential for job creation in the community, which is more important than ever.”
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the funds can be used for a variety of eligible affordable housing activities, including operating assistance; crime prevention; housing services; and the development of affordable housing that may include new construction, acquisition, modernization, or rehabilitations of housing.
