WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley on Monday welcomed the first Senate page to be sponsored by his office: Joy Day, a Salem, Ore., native.
“We are thrilled to have a future Oregon leader in the Senate this summer,” Merkley said. “Joy has demonstrated her talent in academics and extracurricular activities, and we are excited to watch her excel in the fast-paced world of the Senate, as well.”
The highly competitive Senate page program provides students with first-hand experience of Senate operations. Pages deliver correspondence, legislative material, amendments and bills around the Congressional complex and during Congressional proceedings. Only 30 page positions are available among 100 senators.
“As a student leader interested in American government and civic participation, I am so honored to become a U.S. Senate Page,” Day said. “I want to thank Sen. Merkley and his great team for this once-in-a-life-time opportunity.”
Day, a 4.0 student at South Salem High School, has excelled in school and the arts. She is at the top of her class of 455 students and in the International Baccalaureate program. She was a silver medalist in the National French Test, and is a two-time DECA state champion in Marketing Communications and Team Decision-Making, this year advancing to the International competition where she placed fourth overall.
In addition to her academic success, Day is passionate about dance and performing arts. After more than 10 years of training, she is an award-winning ballet soloist and dances at the highest pre-professional level at The Portland Ballet. She has also taught at the Children’s Educational Theatre and Premiere Academy of Performing Arts, both in Salem.
Day’s tenure as a Senate page begins June 12.
