WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court deadlocked 4-4 on a case contesting the Obama Administration’s executive action on immigration, known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA).
“Today’s deadlocked decision by the Supreme Court is a disappointing blow to millions of families who are contributing to thriving communities throughout our nation. As a nation of immigrants, it is critical that we overhaul our insufficient and dysfunctional immigration system. It is long past time for Congress to pass a real, comprehensive immigration reform plan.
“The Court’s tie today underscores another disturbing reality: we do not currently have a fully functioning judiciary. It is unacceptable the Senate has delayed the confirmation of the President’s Supreme Court nominee. Today’s ruling is a perfect example of the perils of the Senate’s inaction due to the outright refusal of Senate Republicans to do their jobs.
“This battle is not over. We are a nation of immigrants and we must continue to embody the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty that reads ‘Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ Congress must pass comprehensive immigration reform and the Senate must fulfill its duties and obligations and confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.”
